Classic Builders’ recently completed PassivHaus Plus project has been shortlisted for a 2020 Construction Excellence South West Award. The scheme at Seaton Beach was commissioned by Seaton Beach Developments and is shortlisted for the CESW’s top sustainability award.
The Construction Excellence South West Awards are a celebration of everything the region’s built environment has to be proud of. The sustainability award recognising projects with high environmental and climate performance; celebrating schemes which aim to meet present day sustainability needs whilst also catering for future generation’s environmental targets and aspirations. Projects with limited impact on the natural environment which demonstrate whole life sustainability are also considered. Recognising these schemes highlights Construction Excellence South West’s drive to promote more environmentally centred construction in the region.
Set on the picturesque seafront of Seaton in Devon, the nine property development is the first PassivHaus Plus apartment scheme in the United Kingdom. Constructed on a brownfield site, the project was built over a period of 60 weeks and to a budget of £2,400,000. The specification includes a ground floor reception area, lift and stairwell leading to eight indulgent dwellings – each with private balconies and sea views. The five storey building is topped with an exclusive penthouse wrapped in zinc cladding. The top floor property enjoys private 360 degree views and balconies over Seaton and the seafront, and is accessible only via secure lift and private stairwell. Externally the development boasts secure private parking, individual storage areas and elegant communal areas. The scheme is a first for the United Kingdom due to the building’s high-thermal efficiencies, sophisticated MVHR system and adaptive solar voltaic matrix. These attributes, as well as an air permeability score of just 0.05 air changes per hour, have highlighted the scheme as a benchmark for future building standards.
If Classic Builders’ Seaton Beach project wins the regional CESW Sustainability Award, it will be invited to compete at a national level against other similar schemes from across the United Kingdom at the Construction Excellence grand finals.
