In May 2019 Classic Builders visited Fowey River Academy in Cornwall to participate in an exciting and engaging careers event for Year 9 Students.

Coordinated by Fowey River Academy and Cornwall and IOS Careers Hub; the event focused on providing 13 – 14 year-old students with an opportunity to meet successful local businesses and gain relevant advice for their upcoming GCSE option choices. Unlike other events where businesses have dedicated stands and wait for the pupils to approach them, this event directly introduced each student to industry professionals and served as a platform for pupils to gain a detailed understanding of possible career choices.

Classic Builders joined 12 other successful businesses and gave detailed advice to over 100 individual pupils. To ensure the students gained an insightful view of the represented industries, the participating pupils came armed with a variety of probing questions. Queries about career paths, qualifications and salaries were top of the agenda for most students. Additional questions about daily routines, industry activities and associated job opportunities gave the participating pupils valuable guidance for their upcoming GCSE option choices.

Paula Hutchins, Group Training Officer for the Cornwall Construction Training Group (CCTG), had this to say:

Choosing a career path can often be difficult but events like these make it so much easier for school students to engage with professionals and gain real direction. We’d like to thank Classic Builders for taking the time out of their day to come and visit the students of Fowey River Academy. Having the opportunity to speak to successful businesses and ask them probing questions is of great benefit to school students – especially at such an important time in their lives. The advice on offer today was incredible and the event has proved an instance success. We’d like to invite Classic Builders and the other participating businesses to return in the future and help grow such an important event.

Business Development Manager for Classic Builders Lewis Tolputt had this to add:

It’s our privilege to have visited Fowey River Academy and to have met so many dedicated students. We work closely with a number of schools and the Year 9 pupils at Fowey River Academy showed great interest in our industry. They asked a variety of engaging questions and proved they had done their research on the construction sector. We’d like to thank Louise Ghillyer (Careers Leader at Fowey River Academy), David Sellers (Enterprise Coordinator from Cornwall and IOS Careers Hub), Paula Hutchens (CCTG) and Steve Forth (Bluefruit) for organising the event and for allowing us the opportunity to help so many enthusiastic students.
